A historic signal box
arrives back at its old spot at Paekakariki
railway station, in a project that aims to
recapture the glory days of the seaside town's
rail heritage.
The
1908 signal box, one of three remaining in the
North Island, was given a $92,000 refurbishment
before being moved this week from the rail yard,
where it had stood derelict for 40 years, back on
to the platform alongside the Paekakariki Railway
and Heritage Museum. Moving the two-storey wooden
tower and completing work on the large levers
used to manually direct trains will bring the
total cost to $140,000.
Paekakariki
Precinct Trust chairwoman Carol Reihana described
the restoration as fantastic. Project manager and
Kapiti mayor Jenny Rowan said the building was a
vital part of the district's tourism gateway
concept.
