TAUIHU – War Canoe Prow

Carved in the local style of the late 1830’s – 1840’s representing Ngati Haumia of Paekakariki, a hapu of Ngati Toa.

Much of the carving is based on the waka 'Waikahua' as seen on the coast in Te Rauparaha’s time. 'Waikahua' was carved in Ngati Raukawa ( connected to Te Rauparaha by his mother ) style by Ngati Whakatere of Shannon. 'Waikahua' was presented to Taiaroa as a peace offering from Te Rauparaha in exchange for 'Tuhiwai'

Te Ati Awa is also represented ( from Tau Ihu carved by Wirimu Kingi ) on account of Ngati Haumia's connections to these people.

The hull ( HIWI ) and top stakes ( RAUAWA ) are made from totara recovered from Paraparaumu Beach.

A totara pile recovered from a demolished early Wellington building was used for the prow ( TAUIHU )

Adzed and carved in the traditional manner by Len Taylor of Paraparaumu.
